Summer Sabbath Thinking

Won’t you take some time off this summer? Relax? Take it easy? Reflect? Pray? Think? Play? Enjoy? Meditate? Contemplate? Journal? Read? Go to the mountains or the beach?

I don’t know what it takes to get us out of life’s races. Yankees? Mets? Kayaking? Picnicking? Swimming? Whatever it is for you, do it this summer. Lay down your work, your goals, your will to achieve, and have some fun.

We can claim the centrality of salvation – we are accepted as we are. God has spoken a “yes” to us in our creation and continues to say “yes” to us each day of our lives. This is not a “yes” we have to earn, achieve, negotiate or anything else. This summer, relish God’s “yes” and let your self, your soul, your essence breathe, grow and heal.

God offers to us four sources of life -- earth, wind, fire and water. Yet as we run life’s races we tend to be alienated from these. End this separation this summer. Touch the earth. Feel the wind. Let the fire fascinate. Bathe in the water.
